"Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me." Jesus said these words to the disciples who were troubled by the words He said. They have just finished observing the Passover, enjoyed a pleasant meal and were ready to relax. Then Jesus sat down and washed his disciples’ feet. Then he began telling them that one among them will betray him, one will deny him and all of them will abandon mim. Jesus revealed that he is going to die and will leave earth soon. Their Master's words must have broken their hearts, shattered their confidence, and left them devastated. John Chapter 14 starts withe reassuring promise that if they trust him, they will not be disappointed. They may not know all the details of why certain things happen in their journey. Believe that God will not let you down, because I am here. Trust in Me that I am going to prepare a place for you.
We live in a time in history in which people around the globe are worried. The recent world had seen the consequences of devastating earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes where people have been ordered to run from their homes. Now, people are asked to run into their homes and lock down. COVID-19 illness spreads like wild fire around the globe. We don't know what to do and where to turn to. People are trying different things to get through. They’re worried about the future—their own and, especially, that of their children and the economic recession that is inevitable.
Martin Luther called these words of Jesus "the best and most comforting sermon that the Lord Christ delivered on earth, a treasure and a jewel." These verses become the foundation of comfort, not only for these disciples but also for generations. When we ever get to the point in life where we run out of escapes and there aren't any more places to hide and rest, these verses make a soft pillow to lay your head and rest.
Life is unpredictable. Life is like a deck of cards. You have a mix of of cards of good and bad, of blessings and treasures or they can be of trials and tribulations. Not all of your cards are losing cards. You have cards that can help you win. We have to play our best with what we have received. The uncertainty of life is not always so thrilling, however. We devise and strategize. We make plans, projections, and proposals about what we would like to see happen in life, but often they are little more than our best guesses. We have no idea what a year, a month, a week, or even the next day might bring. We can only trust the God who knows fully and completely what we can never predict.
The words “Let not” is a call for anyone to accept. The best plan of escape from our troubles is to run to the safe arms of Jesus. Bring your fears to Jesus and he will give you peace in place of fear. Jesus is the way in suffering and pain, in temptation and guilt, in fear and opposition, in loneliness and death. He is not the way around these things but the way through them. If there are worries about tomorrow, remember Jeus is already there waiting. He goes ahead of us to prepare for us. Believe that God has a plan for you, because Jesus has gone to the Father. The sixth-century Christian philosopher Boethius put the gist of the passage beautifully in these lines: "To see thee is the end and the beginning; Thou carriest us, and thou doest go before us, Thou art the journey and the journey's end."
