Jesus explained many spiritual truths by using ordinary life stories called the 'parables'. These are simple stories in life that reveal just enough truth to raise intense curiosity, promising more for interested listeners. These are to be studied in context of the life of Jesus. The parable of the 'prodigal son' is one of the most well known among them (Luke 15). It is about a sweet home where a kind and wealthy father lived with his two sons. The younger son claimed his inheritance and ran off to a far away place. He eventually returned after squandering his money and life. His father received him back as a son with full inheritance restored.
Rejection of the home led to a wasted life time. Remembrance of the home led to repentance and return. Repentance is not just admitting guilt nor it is being regretful when get caught. It is an action that makes a change with a determination to turn around and return. It is asking for forgiveness to God and to the victims that are hurt, and make a covenant that you will not do it again. We admit almost anything but never repent, rather point the finger. The first man Adam blamed Eve and she pointed to the serpent. The symbol is the pointing finger suggesting “the devil made me do it.” Many people try to justify sinful life by blaming their behaviors on the system, environment, traumatic experiences, psychological complexes and many other elements. None of this will help until a personal decision to repent and return happens internally.
We are faced with temptations on a regular basis. Sometimes we fail. But failure is not defeat. When we repent, God forgives and gives second, third and sometimes many more chances. The heavenly Father is not interested in our eloquent excuses and rehearsed prayers. He wants us to repent and return. Don’t look at who you wish you could be. It can only disappoint you. It is God’s business to take you there. Return to God and give life into the hands of God.
Humans have the capacity to change. Repentance is possible only when we believe that it is possible. We must also believe that God really forgives sin. Human sin is so terrible that it cannot be cured through moral and religious laws. We need a sinless savior. God so loved the world that He sent Jesus to die for our sins that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. “He was delivered to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” (Rom 4:25). God's grace is greater than any of our sins and it is always available to everyone.
